Need-Based Tuition Assistance

Each year through the generosity of alumni, parents, students and friends, Cathedral is able to offer tuition assistance to students who might not otherwise be able to afford private education. In fact, Cathedral has awarded approximately $2.8 million in tuition assistance during the 2017-2018 school year. If you are hesitant to consider Cathedral for financial reasons, we strongly encourage you to apply for tuition assistance, as such assistance has made Cathedral a reality for many families!

Step One: Apply Online for Tuition Assistance

Families apply for tuition assistance through FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment. Click here to apply for tuition assistance through FACTS. If you need to know it for any reason, our Institution ID with FACTS is 17006.

Current families should note that this is a new partner company and that we no longer use SSS.

Tuition Assistance Optional Early Application Deadline for Incoming Freshmen: December 31 (more information below)
Tuition Assistance Regular Application Deadline for Incoming Freshmen: February 15 (more information below)
Tuition Assistance Application Deadline for Returning Students: February 15 (more information below)

Step Two: Provide Tax Documentation

Families applying for tuition assistance must also submit to FACTS a copy of all supporting tax documentation such as the following:

  • Copies of the most recent Federal tax forms including all supporting tax schedules
  • Copies of the most recent W-2 forms for each parent/guardian in the household
  • Copies of supporting documentation for Social Security income, welfare, child support, food stamps, workers' compensation, and/or TANF, if applicable

Families submit this documentation directly to FACTS and not to Cathedral High School.

Please note that families applying for tuition assistance for 2018-2019 will submit tax documentation for 2016 (not 2017). For returning families this is a change in requirements.

Application Procedures: Incoming Freshmen

  • Optional Early Deadline (December 31) for Families Seeking Estimate of Tuition Assistance—Families wishing to receive a tentative (estimated) tuition assistance award must apply for tuition assistance by December 31. Families not meeting this deadline but who meet the later deadline of February 15 will receive their tuition assistance award in April, at the same time as returning families.
  • Submission of Tax Documents—Families submit tax documentation (federal tax return and supporting documents) online directly to FACTS for verification.
  • Tentative Awards—Students applying for freshman admission and who apply for tuition assistance deadline of December 31 will receive a tentative tuition assistance award at the time the admission decision is mailed to the family (mid-February). Changes in circumstances, inaccurate income/asset information, and/or budgetary constraints could result in a final award that varies from this tentative award, but this process will allow families to have additional financial information about Cathedral at the time of making an enrollment decision.
  • Household Application Requirements—In the case of parents who are separated or divorced, Cathedral requires that both households complete the application process outlined above. Please note that a household includes parents, guardians, and/or stepparents as applicable.

Application Procedures: Returning Students

  • Deadline (February 15)—The tuition assistance application deadline for the families of current freshmen, sophomores and juniors is February 15. In applying by this deadline date, these families will receive their tuition assistance award at the time of re-enrollment.
  • Submission of Tax Documents—Families submit tax documentation (federal tax return and supporting documents) online directly to FACTS.
  • Household Application Requirements—In the case of parents who are separated or divorced, Cathedral requires that both households complete the application process outlined above. Please note that a household includes parents, guardians, and/or stepparents as applicable.

Other Tuition Assistance Options: Merit Scholarships

Cathedral offers two merit scholarships to students applying for freshman admission based upon the composite score (national percentile) on the STS High School Placement Test. Students scoring at the 98th or 99th percentile composite earn a Presidential Scholarship valued at $12,000 ($3,000 per year). Students scoring at the 96th or 97th percentile composite earn a Cathedral Scholarship valued at $6,000 ($1,500 per year). Presidential Scholarships and Cathedral Scholarships are renewable each year, as long as the student maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and enrolls in courses at the Honors level or higher when courses are offered at such a level.

Presidential Scholars and Cathedral Scholars receive priority consideration for admission to Cathedral, provided they have completed all requirements for application for admission and provided they are in good academic and behavioral standing in their schools.

Cathedral will accept STS High School Placement Test scores for tests taken at other high schools, including those taken as part of a practice exam, as long as the score report is sent directly to the Enrollment Management Office at Cathedral from the school that administered such a test and provided that the test is scored using norms for 8th graders. Please note that spring practice tests from Bishop Chatard High School use 7th grade norms and thus are not valid for the admission process or for merit scholarship consideration.
