Cathedral’s Young Democrats Club is designed to provide students who are interested in becoming active members of the Democratic Party with a forum for discussing the pros and cons of Democratic Party policies. The Young Democrats recognize that being a Democrat does not entail agreeing with or supporting all of the party’s policies and that the party includes a wide spectrum of supporters, from conservatives to liberals, all united by the belief that government power should promote the interests of the common people and protect the rights of minorities. Cathedral’s Young Democrats host guest speakers who are active in the Democratic Party, such as candidates for public office, Democratic office holders, and staff members from Congressional offices. In addition, members of the Young Democrats are provided with opportunities to volunteer for election campaigns and to work at the polls on Election Day. Cathedral’s Young Democrats Club meets twice a month before school in room 4343 for about 30 minutes, unless there is a guest speaker. Meeting times are expanded to one hour to accommodate a speaker, and these meetings are usually open to the Cathedral student body and parents. Time spent in volunteer activities is left to the discretion of individual members. Currently the only fee involved in being a Young Democrat is the cost of a t-shirt, which is approximately $15.
